History

Essex County was formed within East Jersey in 1683 by Connecticut families on the Passaic River in what is now the City of Newark. During the American Revolution, Essex County prospered and completed the New Jersey Railroad, the Morris Canal, the Morris and Essex Railroad. In 1895 Essex County was the first County in the United States to create a County park system. The Governor of New Jersey created the Essex County Parks Commission and 60 acres of land from the City of Newark established Branch Brook Park. Most of Essex County's 25 parks and reservations were designed by Olmsted, the creator of New York's Central Park. Port Newark, Newark City Subway and Newark Airport were opened in the 1920's. Development and growing communities provide an attractive setting for residents and a major national transportation hub and shipping ports. Essex County includes the communities of Livingston, Millburn, North Caldwell, and Essex Fells. They are four of the wealthiest towns in America and have all been known to be home to famous actors, musicians, corporate heads, and members of the New Jersey Nets and New Jersey Devils. While many residents commute to New York City or Hudson County, Organon, Anheuser-Busch, Automatic Data Processing, Inc., CIT Group, Hoffmann-LaRoche, Grainger, Dun & Bradstreet and Prudential are located in Essex County. The county is also home to Newark Liberty International Airport, Essex County Airport, and Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal.
